Almost every modern luxury car is packed to the brim with electronic gadgets. While many of these gadgets are used merely for entertainment and comfort features, some of them can potentially save your life by helping you avoid an accident.
Lane Departure Warning Systems
Many modern luxury cars are equipped with sensors and cameras that warn you when your car begins to drift out of its lane. These systems use a series of lasers, infrared sensors, and video cameras to determine the boundaries of the lane.
If you become distracted and accidentally drift onto the lines that are painted on the road, your car immediately alerts you. The most advanced systems will even electronically steer your car back into the middle of your lane to ensure you that don't cause an accident by sideswiping cars driving next to you.
Collision Avoidance Systems
Similar to lane departure warning systems, collision avoidance systems use a series of sensors to prevent you from running into other vehicles and large obstacles in the road, such as deer. If you happen to be distracted when the person driving in front of you slams on their brakes, the system will alert you so you can stop in time to avoid a rear-end collision. Some of the more advanced systems can even apply your brakes for you.
The computers generally have far quicker reaction times than most people, so an automatic braking system may allow you to stop quicker than you would have even if you were paying full attention to the road. Not only can that save drivers' lives, it can also save the lives of pedestrians who step out into the road at the wrong time.
Blind Spot Warning Systems
Many new luxury cars also feature systems to monitor your blind spots. If a car driving alongside you as at a certain angle, you may not be able to see it when you check your mirrors. When you activate your turn signal to change lanes, the warning system checks your blind spots and alerts you if another car is beside you so that you don't dangerously merge in front of it. Some cars also feature rear blind spot monitors that alert you when there is oncoming traffic as you're backing out of a parking space.
